Shepard Fairey Completes “Welcome Home” Mural
October 4th, 2017
Baker Block is pleased to announce the much-anticipated completion of the massive mural by Shepard Fairey. Visible from the 55 freeway and beyond, the mural, named “Welcome Home,” is the largest mural in Orange County and a reflection of Baker Block’s commitment to both Costa Mesa’s artistic community and surf-skate culture.
“Costa Mesa is the place where surf, skate, music and art intersect,” said CityView CEO Sean Burton. “We wanted to incorporate all those themes not only in the day to day living of Baker Block residents but also right on the exterior of our building, for all the world to see: Welcome Home.”
CityView, the investment management and development firm responsible for Baker Block, invited world-renowned street artist Shepard Fairey to paint the mural in April. Fairey, whose OBEY worldwide headquarters is also located in Orange County, commenced the project in September. Along with several painters on his team, Fairey built upon a series of floral patterns, geometric lines and shapes, mandalas, nature, water, wings, and a female figure for this piece.
“This piece in sum is a message of peace, independence, and the beauty and openness of humanity and nature,” said Fairey.
At 136-feet long by 55-feet high, the mural is more than 8,000 square-feet and required more than 460 cans of spray paint. The design features an amalgamation of several different visual motifs and themes that are relevant and often present in Fairey’s work such as the independent nature of surf culture and the symbioses of humans and nature.
